Hyunji-A 'Speck of Dust' on Sudbeat Music
A lesson in restraint and emotion, the latest release from Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music comes from Hyunji-A, who presents 'Speck of Dust'. Out now on Beatport, this is the label's fifth release of the year and was one of Amonita's picks on his recent RAINBOW CHART on 1 April.
It is a superb addition to the progressive house catalogue. The weight of 'Speck of Dust' is in the chords, rich and slow-burning, rolling out with intent under crowded percussion. It never pushes; it glides, moderate in both level and headroom, with a dark top end that keeps the mood deep into the night. The melody is at once melancholic and uplifting, the kind that locks a room into its hypnotic pull. A must-listen for those who like their house music with narrative.

Montreal-based Hyunji Lee marries her love of electronic sounds with a classical piano background focusing on melodic and form. Breaking on to the scene in 2020 her deck skills have seen her growing her gigs portfolio, recently supporting Sasha in Toronto, while her studio skills are winning her plaudits across the scene with releases on 3rd Avenue, onedotsixtwo and Mango Alley.
Opening with 'Speck of Dust' a deep, workman-like groover, we are quickly into Hyunji's world of soulful understatement. Icy pads ebb and flow with the skippy percussion building tension over the opening section. Then, a whiff of melody sparks the track into life before descending back into the groove. Masterful.
Next up, 'Softly' is presented in club format and as a tastefully deep dub. Tribal and melodic, the club mix uses all her skills to create a vocal-based vibe that tantalises and hypnotises. Keeping it sparse and musical, the dub focuses on the strong narrative of the club.
